Bike Wisconsin® Suggestions for Cycling With Kids
by Bike Wisconsin

A Bike Wisconsin® Tour can be a fun family event. Please read closely the information below on our policies and suggestions.

  • Everyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian or chaperone and have the written consent of their parent or guardian to participate on a Bike Wisconsin® Tour.
  • All youth under the age of 16 must be under the direct supervision of a parent/ guardian or chaperone at all times, and ride their bicycle in line-of-sight of that parent or guardian.
  • All children under the age of 13 must ride with the parent/guardian or chaperone at all times, and bicycle within a bikes length (front or back) of the parent/guardian or chaperone.

Keep in mind that high temperatures, sun exposure and long periods on the bike can be strenuous on young children. Please consider carefully your child’s limitations and what is best for your family’s health and enjoyment.

Keep the kids in the loop. Work as a team and make decisions with your child whenever possible, letting them know, in advance, what is on the daily agenda.

  • Each evening review the cue sheet with your children so they know what to expect on the next days route.
  • Explain what route marking signs (directional arrows) look like.
  • Ensure that your child’s wrist band is intact (Rider ID and SAG -help phone number).
  • Discuss a possible plan of action in the event that you and your child become separated on the route.

Aim for visual distances.  Cycle with your child so you can see them!  A lost, frustrated, exhausted child is not a happy one.

Carry enough food and water. Your child will need to eat and drink more frequently that you do. Be sure to pack lots of granola bars and other healthy snacks.  Take advantage of the rest and water stops along the route.

Tired Child   If you child is too tired to continue riding and needs SAG support, you must accompany your child in the SAG vehicle.

Take lots of breaks. Take advantage of fun places for breaks; stop at playgrounds and ice cream shops. Your child will love the time with you!

Celebrate success. No success is too small for celebration.  Keep the praise coming and they’ll keep pedaling.

Keep in touch. Let your friends and family share in your good times. Consider posting your ride experiences on the tour Facebook page. There will be a computer lab set up in most overnight sites, so hop on the web and share the fun!

Enjoy the tour.  These memories will last a lifetime!
