"Wisconsin is a great state to ride in. The roads are smooth and well maintained, the scenery is beautiful,"  Marlene H. Woodland CA
Wisconsin has some of the best roads for biking in the country!

During the boom in the Dairy Industry at the beginning of the 1900's a more efficient way was needed to ensure that milk, a very perishable commodity got to the markets in town before it spoiled. The majority of roads in the countryside at that time were maintained by local residents but this system was inefficient and prone to muddy roads and slow travel when it rained. These conditions tended to slow down and sometimes stop the transport of milk to the town markets.

A coalition was formed of businessman, progressive farm groups, engineers and bicyclists called the "Good Roads Movement." They proposed the state should finance the paving of roads, and an amendment to the state constitution was passed in 1908. Today there are over 19,620 miles of paved two-lane roads in Wisconsin. Heaven for cyclists!

Bicyclists can enjoy this wonderful network of roads with minimal car traffic as they pedal through rural Wisconsin, past century farms (100 year old farms) and small towns. Truly great biking in Wisconsin!
